CARING PASTORAL SUPPORT

Our International Team works closely with the students, teaching colleagues, homestay provider, homestay families, guardians and agents to ensure our students are supported and cared for as they integrate into Rutherford College and New Zealand life.

Our Pastoral care system is based on the belief that we do what is necessary in order to ensure that your child’s participation in class and the wider school is as rewarding and successful as possible. Our strategies are designed to cope with students who are not fulfilling their potential.

Rutherford College adheres to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

NUTURING STUDENT HOMESTAYS

Our Police-approved student homestays are carefully selected by our homestay provider, Lake Panorama Student Homestays Ltd.

They provide all the necessary checks and supportive ongoing care and liaison to ensure a successful homestay experience for the students for the duration of their stay.

PURPOSE-BUILT INTERNATIONAL VILLAGE

Our International Village provides a welcoming reception, student computer pod, classrooms, student locker facilities and a kitchen.

Both the Director and Dean of International Students are onsite in the Village fulltime and students are welcome to seek their assistance, advice and/or support whenever their needs arise.

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

The Student Health Clinic is situated at the back entrance of Rutherford College (Toru St), and is the first prefab building on the right. Our Registered Nurse is based in the clinic from 7.30am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and is qualified to tend to all injured or ill students.  If necessary, she will refer them onto other medical establishments, or send them home.

GUIDANCE

At Rutherford College we have two counsellors serving our school community. Our counsellors have Post Graduate qualifications in Counselling and are registered with the New Zealand Association for Counsellors. We abide by the Code of Ethics of New Zealand Association of Counsellors, which means that confidentiality is maintained unless there is an imminent risk to safety. We are both qualified and registered teachers, with a number of years’ experience between us. We have regular supervision outside the department and are committed to ongoing professional development.
