STUDY PATHWAYS/JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Accounting Major

Graduating with an accounting major will enable you to undertake accountancy related work in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors. With appropriate choices of ‘elective’ courses (see Degree Electives below) the accounting major will enable graduates to meet the academic (provisional admission) requirements for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants – in either the Chartered Accountant (CA) or Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) Colleges. Please discuss this with the Programme Co-ordinator.

Information Systems Major

Typical opportunities after graduation include work as an IT Consultant, IT Business Analyst, IT Web Marketing Manager, Systems Analyst or IT Accounting Manager.

Management Major

Typical opportunities after graduation include work as a Team Leader, Functional Manager or Senior Supervisor in a wide range of organisations and industries.

Marketing Major

Typical opportunities after graduation include work as a Marketing Manager, National Sales Manager, Key Account Manager or Product Manager.

Students with specific career plans may wish to consider the BBS (unendorsed) so that they can maximise the opportunity to select courses that meet their specific needs.

Concurrent Bachelor of Business Studies and Bachelor of Computing Systems (BBS/BCS)

The concurrent Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Bachelor of Computing Systems (BCS) allow students to complete two separate degrees within four and a half years. The BBS/BCS concurrent degrees will provide students with a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of areas vital to the business and computing industry, which will enable them to be work-ready.

Concurrent Bachelor of Recreation and Sport and Bachelor of Business Studies (BRS/BBS)

The concurrent Bachelor of Recreation and Sport (BRS) and Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) allow students to complete two separate degrees in 4½ years. The BRS/BBS concurrent degrees will provide students with sound knowledge in the recreation and sport areas and will give students a competitive advantage when seeking employment.

PRACTICUM, WORK EXPERIENCE

The workplace component of the BBS degree involves two courses:

1. Business Operations. In this course, project work requiring you to investigate a particular aspect of an organisation will integrate the knowledge and skills developed in your foundation courses with real-world business operations.
2. Industry Based Learning. This is the capstone course in the degree. In your final year of study you will undertake a semester-length project for a business organisation in its workplace. The course will integrate the specialist knowledge gained in your degree with the dynamics of business practice.
3. Business Project. A more in-depth version of Industry Based Learning.

In addition other courses may involve site visits and/or guest speakers from industry.
